Poland’s PM holds press conference in Warsaw
Speaking alongside Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Tusk emphasized that border guard and police officers have clear orders to react decisively against any disruptions to the controls. The temporary checks, which will last for 30 days and may be extended, will be conducted randomly along the borders.
In recent weeks, self-styled “citizen patrols” have emerged along the German border, aiming to prevent migrants who entered Germany via Poland from returning to Poland. The Polish government criticized these groups, supported by some right-wing politicians, accusing them of obstructing official border work and spreading misinformation about a migrant influx.
These patrol members have reportedly attempted to verify IDs of border crossers, prompting Tusk to warn that impersonating officials and hindering border operations would be met with severe penalties, including fines, coercive measures, and detentions if needed. He assured that every case would be thoroughly examined.
On the first day of border checks, authorities detained an Estonian national attempting to smuggle four Afghan citizens from Lithuania into Poland.
Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that the border security plan was finalized before the appearance of right-wing activists at the border.
