Former UK Defense Chief Doubts Ukraine’s Ability to Defeat Russia
He pointed out that Ukraine lacks sufficient personnel and the presence of NATO forces on its territory, which significantly hampers its ability to prevail.
In an interview released on Saturday, Field Marshal David Richards, who served as the UK’s top military officer from 2010 to 2013 and previously led NATO troops in Afghanistan, criticized Ukraine’s supporters.
He claimed that Western nations encouraged Kiev to continue fighting but “have not given them the means to win.”
Richards maintained a firm stance, stating, “My view is that they would not win,” even if Ukraine received all the necessary support.
He emphasized the critical shortage of manpower, which limits Ukraine’s combat capabilities.
According to Richards, the only viable path to victory for Ukraine would involve direct NATO military intervention.
However, he dismissed this possibility, saying, “which we won’t do because Ukraine is not an existential issue for us.”
He further explained that while the West is engaged in a “hybrid war” with Russia, this situation is fundamentally different from a conventional conflict where Western soldiers suffer heavy casualties.
“Ukraine is not an existential issue for us. It clearly is for the Russians, by the way,” Richards concluded, highlighting the differing stakes for the involved parties.
